Dialogue[]
Exalting Sanctum[]
- (First interaction)
- Yancui: Hello, guest. Sorry to bother you, but I noticed from your attire that you are an Outworld traveler. Do you have any unique ingredients or recipes that you can tell me about?
I don't do my own cooking.
- Yancui: I see. Sorry for bothering you then.
It's all home-cooked fare. Nothing special.
- Yancui: Is that so? I guess I'm the one asking a strange question.
Have you heard of interstellar locusts?
- Yancui: I've eaten them before... They didn't taste great though. Thanks anyways.
- Yancui: Ah, I forgot to introduce myself... I am Yancui, head chef and owner of Spices Supreme. The restaurant's not busy right now, so I'm taking a break here in Exalting Sanctum, but couldn't take my mind off developing new dishes.
- Yancui: Spices Supreme isn't far from here. Please visit us if you're interested. Our motto is to "cook for the people." We guarantee our food is inexpensive and tasty!
- Yancui: Ah, I've chatted so much with you. Here's something for you to have a taste test. You must come to Spices Supreme to try our dishes if you get a chance! It'll be an experience you'll never forget!
- (Continue on to dialogue options below)
- (Subsequent interactions)
- Yancui: Let's have a look then. What shall we have for this week's Odd-taste Thursday... Gizzard sashimi, kidney stew, brown sugar sesame porridge, steamed boar skin, charcoal barbecued black donkey hooves, caramel-drizzled stinky tofu...
- Yancui: Hmm? You want to discuss food for a little longer? I love to chat about cuisine with people.
There is something I want to ask you...
- Yancui: Go ahead. I'll tell you everything I know, as long as they're not business secrets.
Business secrets? Such as?
- Yancui: Hmm? I was just saying that! I don't think I have anything you'd call a business secret...
- Yancui: You might laugh at us, but we Xianzhou chefs are very careful about our recipes being leaked to the public. Some of our most common cooking methods have even been mystified...
- Yancui: For example, slicing tofu into thin threads as fine as silk... At the end of the day, it's just putting in time and effort and learning through mistakes.
- Yancui: But spoken from a chef's perspective, it becomes all about the "power in the wrists," "artful skill," "unfathomable secret" — all these pretentious big words that confuse people... Even I'm left scratching my head.
- Yancui: Spices Supreme employs no such tactics. If you really want to know how a dish is made, I'll even give you a step-by-step. Doesn't matter if you don't get it the first time: just look up "Spices Supreme Yancui" online and my recipes' videos are all there.
Do you have any recommendations?
- Yancui: You can try our trademark dishes like the crisped melon and diced chicken, pork slices in fish sauce, and Granny Chen's tofu to start. These are all famous dishes that have withstood the test of time. You can't go wrong with them.
- Yancui: Everyone's tastes are different, and my recommendations might not suit your palate. But we've got myriads of flavors, so I'm sure there's one that'll pique your fancy.
- Yancui: You know the Xianzhou native's life is long, so they are very particular about variety in their pursuit of flavor.
- Yancui: Every Thursday, we've got an "Odd-taste Thursday" event, where we serve some dishes with rather interesting flavors. It's to provide some variety and fun for Xianzhou gormandizers.
- Yancui: These new dishes may not be tasty, but they'll definitely leave you with an unforgettable experience.
What's your favorite dish?
- Yancui: I'm ashamed to admit that though I run a restaurant, I'm actually quite picky about my food. There are some things I don't eat... such as...
- Yancui: Such as animals who can't defeat me — I'll never eat those!
- Yancui: We Vidyadhara have always observed the law of natural flow. All creatures are connected to one another, and life is everlasting in its cycle. Based on this principle, if an animal can't defeat me on even ground, I'd never use it as food! That is my martial way!
What exactly are you talking about...
What's the logic behind this?
- Yancui: C'mon, that's where you're ignorant! I may look like a pushover, but I am Cloudbanner Meteor Fist's chief disciple. My fists are unrivaled among the auxiliary martial art schools in Xianzhou!
- Yancui: It's just that I went into the food business in the end, so I didn't take over the martial art school. But I've still retained the pride of a martial artist, heehee.
- Yancui: I don't eat small fish and shrimp, nor herbivores, or even domesticated beasts... I only eat animals I can fight to the death with.
So... what's your favorite dish?
- Yancui: Oh, I completely forgot your question! We Vidyadhara can't reproduce naturally, so the Sky-Faring Commission's travel reviewers are fairly lenient, which means I've had many opportunities to hunt on other worlds.
- Yancui: Some worlds teem with numerous ferocious beasts... My most vivid memory was of an ocean world called Thalassa...
- Yancui: It had a giant airborne beast called a six-eyed flying fish. I stood on it, and we were locked in battle for hours. It was a miracle it didn't swallow me whole!
- Yancui: The fins of that fish were delicious beyond compare! That fin stew was the tastiest dish I'd ever had...
- Yancui: Apart from that, I also like deep-fried anemone, fruitwood-grilled Shantak moa drumettes, viscorpus sugar balls stir-fried with cured meat... Oh right, these viscorpi may be really tiny, but they sure can conjure horrifying hallucinations. What a ride...
- Yancui: Haha, sorry, very few people ask me about my ingredient-seeking escapades, and I got carried away.
Is... Is that so...? Amazing...
- Yancui: Heheh, I am quite amazing! Not just at martial arts, but cooking too. You must try my food out!
About Spices Supreme...
- Yancui: You're wondering why I opened this restaurant? Well, it's a long story...
- Yancui: The IPC had this subsidiary company a hundred years ago which sold conveyor belts, and they had an "Interastral Gourmet Association" that went around and rated all the eateries throughout the whole galaxy.
- Yancui: If you get one star, you're part of the "Interastral Selection." If you get five stars, then you're the Galaxy's Finest Diner." Across all of the Xianzhou ships, the only place to ever get five stars from them is "Dragon Palace's Kitchen" on the Zhuming.
- Yancui: Being Vidyadhara, I thought I had to go and support the business of my kin, especially when they received such honors... But that place charged hundreds of thousands of credits for portions that won't even be filling for little birds! Would you believe it?
- Yancui: That chef even put on this pretentious air and told Outworlders, "We Vidyadhara are indifferent to the trappings of fame and fortune, which is why we eat like this." Ack, that was too much...
- Yancui: That's when I was determined to run a restaurant that goes completely opposite to everything they stood for. I want big portions, quality food, and low prices! I'm telling ya, Spices Supreme is that dream come true!
- Yancui: But to be honest, if you hadn't mentioned it today, I'd have forgotten about that goal... Now I run the restaurant just to have fun. Nothing else.
I'll come back later...
- Yancui: Fine. Not to worry. Any time! Can't wait! Take care! Stay safe out there!

The Ambrosial Arbor is growing again...
- (Note: This dialogue option is available after having completed Wood Sprouts Anew, Fate Tilts Askew. It is available for clicking only once.)
- Yancui: I was still working back of house then, and all we could hear was the clattering of diners out front.
- Yancui: I rushed out of the kitchen and watched as the Arbor slowly grew. I had been pretty well-traveled, but I was flabbergasted.
- Yancui: Just looking at that thing made my skin crawl. It grew at this weird, steady pace as if it were the only tree in all of existence...
- Yancui: After all these years of boxing, my intuition is still dead-on about this kind of thing... That thing is so packed full of vitality that it could almost raise the dead...
- Yancui: So... You have to be careful in the future. I'm still waiting for you to come and visit us in-store.
Aurum Alley[]
- Yancui: Well, if it isn't my regular customer! Spices Supreme is all about making affordable and tasty dishes, so come in and take a seat!
- Yancui: ...Or, maybe you'd like to have another talk about food, young (man/
lady)? I'd like to buy some food.
- (Opens Spices Supreme Store)
Finally, the Ambrosial Arbor crisis is behind us...
- (This dialogue option is available upon completing Obsequies Performed, A Long Road Ahead)[verification needed]
- Yancui: Yeah, it's finally over... Even though it hasn't been that long, it feels like we've been going through it for a long time.
- Yancui: I still remember clearly that scene, when I was in my kitchen and I came out and saw it growing... I've never seen anything so spectacular since it stopped growing.
- Yancui: This is actually a good thing... A restaurant should feel like a restaurant. Back then, everyone was so troubled and weighed down by their worries that they couldn't even fully enjoy the dishes I had carefully prepared for them.
- Yancui: ...That was definitely a terrible time... But now, everyone has calmed down, and I feel happy and motivated to see how they enjoy my dishes.
Has business been going well lately?
- Yancui: Thanks to your sponsorship, my business has been going well. A few days ago, my store was even ranked on the "Top 100 Darkest Dishes in the Cosmos" made by Outworlders... Haha.
- Yancui: My friends were afraid to tell me about it because they thought I'd get angry... but I'm actually happy!
- Yancui: Recently, I've been getting a lot of attention from Outworlders who come here just to try my "dark dishes". They even formed a "Dark Cuisine Council" and have been asking me to join as a member!
- Yancui: I'm glad to have more customers. As for the "Council," however... I hate the idea of chefs grouping together to come up with "industry standards" or something like that, so I've refused their offer.
- Yancui: Just drop by and enjoy a hearty meal whenever you're free. My store might be busy these days, but I'll always reserve a seat for you!
There is something I'd like to ask...
- Yancui: I'm not too busy right now, so feel free to ask me any questions. I'll do my best to satisfy your curiosity.
Is this Spices Supreme?
- Yancui: Right you are! You are now at Spices Supreme, one of the oldest and most famous restaurants in Aurum Alley. Even though you're an Outworlder, you might have heard of our special Xingyuan-style dishes.
- Yancui: How about trying some of our signature dishes like Crisped Melon and Diced Chicken, Pork Slices in Fish Sauce, and Granny Chen's Tofu? You can't possibly go wrong with delicacies that have withstood the test of time.
- Yancui: Furthermore, we host a "Odd-taste Thursday" every Thursday, where you'll find new dishes with interesting flavors. These new dishes will bring new twists and fun to the gourmets in Luofu.
Let's talk about Xingyuan-style dishes...
- Yancui: Xingyuan-style dishes are characterized by their delicate usage of seasonings, as each ingredient requires its unique blend of seasonings and spices to fully exploit its flavor. Most Xingyuan-style dishes have a hot and peppery taste, sometimes with a sour or slightly bitter touch.
- Yancui: Personally, I highly recommend this Chili Oil Beef Offal Stew. This dish is made by marinating the beef offal, slicing it, and then pouring chili oil and grounded pepper over it. Its spicy and beefy aroma is simply irresistible!
Please tell me more about Odd-taste Thursday...
- Yancui: These new weird dishes are basically "tentative works" and may not be delicious, but they will definitely give you a new experience that you won't forget.
- Yancui: If I may, I would recommend deep-fried flying sea anemone, fruitwood-grilled Shantak moa drumettes, and sugarball-fried viscorpi.
I heard you're a skilled fighter, Master Yancui?
- Yancui: Haha, I may look like a pushover, but I am the Cloudbanner Meteor Fist's chief disciple.
I only eat animals that I can fight to the death with.
- Yancui: Of course, that's just my personal mantra. The Spices Supreme serves everything. Don't worry.
What's your favorite dish?
- Yancui: Some worlds teem with numerous ferocious beasts... My most vivid memory was of an ocean world called Thalassa...
