The Swarm is a faction in Honkai: Star Rail. They are the remnants of the Aeon of Propagation, Tayzzyronth's spread over the universe during the Swarm Disaster.
Description[]
"Human desires are complex... twisted... and even ugly. By contrast, the aesthetics of the Swarm and Legion are so pure. It's... admirable."
Life is born of an instinctive desire to reproduce, and the senses and spirit are only unintended byproducts created when carrying out the basic instinct of reproduction. Those who don't submit to their primal desire claim to be wise, unaware that they are already considered food for the offspring of Tayzzyronth, the Aeon of Propagation, the Father of the Swarm. The multitudes of the Swarm King's offspring can cover the starry night, their antenna long enough to measure the cosmos. Worlds fearfully call the self-replicated chaos as — The Swarm.
Spirit, soul, technology, philosophy... In the thousand compound eyes of Tayzzyronth, the universal laws pursued by all intelligent races are but a side effect of the ultimate goal of reproduction. The Swarm doesn't seek a following by higher races, for "worship" itself is an unnecessary desire. Only the flying creatures that succumb to the primal instinct will be attracted to the self-replicating primordial tide, transforming to be part of the Swarm after becoming its food.
Even without their god, the Swarm continues expanding at an incalculable rate, bringing fear and disaster to worlds chosen as their nests.Overview[]
The Swarm is a mass horde of diverse insectoid creatures with the sole drive to propagate and spread. They originally came from the world of Lepismat,[1] but through the actions of two warring groups, a group of bounty hunters and the Elydichnan army, Tayzzyronth became the last of the Coleoptera, and ascended as an Aeon out of loneliness.[2] Through Tayzzyronth, The Swarm evolved and spread, powered by the Path of Propagation.[3] The Swarm are connected to Tayzzyronth through a hivemind,[4] with many being personally bred by Tayzzyronth, such as Skaracabaz.[5] While Tayzzyronth would later fall, The Swarm are still an active threat in the universe to this day, having recently damaged worlds such as Adlivun,[6] and even more recently Glamoth.[7]
Leadership[]
Tayzzyronth[]
Tayzzyronth was the driving force behind the rise of The Swarm, having ascended as the last of the Coleoptera and replicated THEMSELF across the universe.[8] It is unclear if Tayzzyronth still has a hivemind connection with the rest of The Swarm, but The Swarm still follows Tayzzyronth regardless of THEIR silence.[4]
Swarm Kings[]
Swarm Kings are the currently known highest authority besides Tayzzyronth. While there is not much information about their exact structure in the hierarchy, entire linages of bugs are named after them, and one member, Skaracabaz, was personally bred by Tayzzyronth and given Emanator status.[5] When a Swarm King dies, their flock loses all vitality, and falls into silence.[9]
Known Swarm Kings[]
- Afterglow Swarm King
- Calamity Swarm King[10][Note 1]
- Deceiver Swarm King[11][Note 1]
- Diabolical Swarm King[12][Note 1]
- Pacifist Swarm King[13][Note 1]
- Phantom Swarm King[14]
- Starcrusher Swarm King (Skaracabaz ††)
Known Species[]
Sir Duroy, a member of the Intelligentsia Guild, explored the starry seas and authored the thirty-volume of the Chronicles of Interdimensional Insects. The book provides detailed records of over a dozen confirmed species of lepisma and countless subspecies spanning across the stars.[15]
Stings[]
True Stings emit fibrous particles from their wings during flight — the inhalation of which can induce perceptual distortions and hallucinations. These visions feed on people's subjective experiences and long-term sentiments in order to take the form of what they personally desire.[16]
- Swarm: True Sting — Mature True Sting
- Lesser Sting — Youngling of True Sting
- Juvenile Sting — Youngling of True Sting
- Giant Sting — Can reach tremendous proportions and is big enough to swallow an entire starnought[16]
- Gnaw Sting — A subspecies of Stings that underwent mutations during reproduction
- Silver Sting[17][18]
- Swarm Mother[17]
- Afterglow Sting[19]
- Computer Sting[20]
Some units of the Swarm have transformed into ground combat units. They have sacrificed flight for colossal size and hardened carapaces. These units often serve as the shock troops of the Swarm Invasion, using their massive bodies to break through defenses.[21]
Harbinger of Death: Swarm Nightmare[]
Harbinger of Death: Swarm Nightmare is a shell covered in strange matter, distorted by a Stellaron's will as if a suit Glamoth armor corroded by Propagation.[22] During Gopher Wood's scheme of recreating the Swarm Disaster and resurrecting Ena the Order in Penacony, he disguised the Stellaron as the Swarm Disaster's Chrysalis of Extinction, which answered Firefly's desire to keep living and created Harbinger of Death: Swarm Nightmare. It was eventually defeated by Firefly.[23][24]

Trivia[]
- The Swarm bears strong similarities to the Zerg Swarm from the StarCraft series. Both are a set of arthropod aliens united in a hive mind, likened to a swarm due to their rapid reproduction rates and swarm-like attack strategies.
- The related Achievement I am the Swarm references the same series in the form of a quote spoken by Sarah Kerrigan in StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm.
Notes[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 While not directly stated, the naming conventions of multiple Divergent Universe: The Human Comedy Equations suggests the remaining titles of each Swarm King. This is based on the fact that Afterglow Worker, Phantom Worker, and Starcrusher Worker are each about descendants from each respective Swarm King, which suggests the other equations are about similar descendants.
