The Skyfolk are a race hailing from Amphoreus.

Description[]

Biology[]

Originally, the Skyfolk were split into three distinct clans: the Sunfolk, Rainfolk, and Winterfolk, devoted to the sun, storms, and snow, respectively. The Sunfolk and Rainfolk were the most prominent of the two, waging war against each other.[1]

Despite these distinctions, there is no clear biological differences between each clan of Skyfolk besides their different affinities to different types of magic.

Abilities[]

The abilities of the original clans of Skyfolk are only mentioned in the Readable A Letter Home, which records the Unnamed Chrysos Heir's memories and experiences.

According to the Unnamed Chrysos Heir, the Sunfolk were powerful Luxomancers,[Note 1] with an ability to "weave ribbons of radiant light." This light weaving was accompanied by an affinity towards running, being naturally faster than the other two clans.

The Rainfolk, noted by the Unnamed Chrysos Heir, were capable of creating "rainbow-colored cloud bridges" during the Sky Light Festivals, likely being tied to Meteorokinesis.[Note 2] A joke within the family of the Unnamed Chrysos Heir also claimed that a Rainfolk's sneeze at a Winterfolk tea party could turn "all the tea into frozen columns," likely hinting at Aquamancy,[Note 3] which has been exhibited by Hyacine.

Winterfolk were regarded as powerful Cryomancers,[Note 4] able to fashion instruments from ice and rain snowflakes at will.[2]

Culture[]

Politics[]

The politics of the Skyfolk are well documented in many sources, especially the fierce hatred between the Sunfolk and the Rainfolk.

The Sunfolk and Rainfolk had a long history of mutual distrust, with the Sunfolk believing themselves to be the chosen of Aquila and the Rainfolk being lesser in kind. Because of this belief, the Rainfolk were unfairly persecuted by the Sunfolk, with any attempts to intervene by the Winterfolk being treated as treason. One such victim on the Winterfolk's behalf was Crispus, who — after his rise as one of the Arbiters of Aquila — noticed the injustices performed by Aquila's priests against the Rainfolk. He harbored some in his residence, but was eventually found out and stoned to death alongside his companion Xiliel.

The persecution of the Rainfolk by the Sunfolk only ended when the dual-blooded exile, Seliose, returned to the Eye of Twilight and slayed Aquila. With Aquila's fall, the Rainfolk and Sunfolk morphed into Acolytes of Aquila and Acolytes of Seliose, returning to their conflict in these new forms. This consistent persecution eventually led to Seliose killing all but a few Skyfolk, casting them into the golden lava beneath the Eye of Twilight.

After the purge of the Skyfolk and the agreement between the Unnamed Chrysos Heir and Seliose, the Skyfolk were extorted and expelled from many city-states until the rise of General Ektra. Ektra's use of her medical expertise gained the Skyfolk a brief century of allyship with Okhema before it fell into political unrest, forcing their expulsion. By the time Jacyntha's granddaughter — Hyacinthia — was born, Jacyntha attempted to gain the allyship of Castrum Kremnos by participating in the Kremnos Festival, ultimately losing to Krateros in the final round. She later succumbed to the wounds she sustained in the battle against Krateros. After this, the remaining Skyfolk "scattered in all directions," with only Hyacine remaining in the present day.[3]

Entertainment[]

The original entertainment culture of the Skyfolk is detailed heavily in the Readable A Letter Home, which records the Unnamed Chrysos Heir's memories and experiences.

Two noted games within the Skyfolk clans were Lightchasing and Kite Dancing. Lightchasing involved splitting up into teams to chase each other through shadows and rays of light coming from the sun, whilst Kite Dancing focused on gliding along the wind through clouds. Kite Dancing was treated as an essential activity to learn, as it was alleged to help Skyfolk learn to control the air.

Dining activities within the Skyfolk were varied between clans. The Sunfolk preferred to dine at midday in "Sun Feasts," using crystal vessels to refract sun in order to cook their meals. The Rainfolk were said to only dine in thunderstorms, as they believed the air quality made the food fresher in kind. Finally, the Winterfolk held an event known as a "Coldwoods Tea Party," dining "beneath trees covered in icy flowers, sipping tea brewed from starlight." It was alleged that the tea would change colors with the temperature shifts, losing its clarity overtime.

There are two festivals of note for the old Skyfolk: the Sky Light Festival and the annual Dawn and Dusk Festival. The Sky Light Festivals were held "when Aquila's light shone brightest," leading to all tribes gathering in unison for the event and using their talents to paint the Celestial Mural in different colors. The Dawn and Dusk Festival on the other hand, expanded activities to include food and storytelling, with each clan performing different musical sets with their own unique talents.

All Skyfolk gain a winged beast to accompany them throughout their lives, no matter their clan. Some — like Seliose — were capable of gaining two winged beasts, but it was not common.[2]

History[]

In Skyfolk myth, the Celestial Globe was said to have been gifted to them by Aquila. In truth, however, Aquila never sought mortal devotion, and the sky civilization was born from humanity’s own efforts.[4]

The Sky Castrum was one of the most prominent and powerful city-states during the Era Bellica. Aquila, alongside the Sky Castrum, fought against Nikador, the Titan of Strife, in the Chrysos War. It was a formidable force, able to stand toe-to-toe with Castrum Kremnos itself.[5]

Within the Sky Castrum, a growing conflict emerged between the two Skyfolk tribes — the Sunfolk and the Rainfolk. This arose after Aquila ascended into the skies to escape the black tide, steering clear of dark clouds and storms. The Sunfolk took this as a sign of favor and began persecuting the Rainfolk.[1]

Seeing the growing conflict between the two tribes, Seliose, together with her two steeds, Lunabis and Solabis, challenged Aquila to battle. Upon defeating Aquila and touching the Coreflame of Sky, Seliose discovered Aquila's cold indifference and loathing toward humanity. When she witnessed the Skyfolk continuing to persecute one another — even in her name — she lost all faith in them. In her disillusionment, she commanded her two steeds to act as executioners, casting all but one of the Chrysos Heir Skyfolk into the golden magma that powered the city-state.

The Unnamed Chrysos Heir descended to the world below and, in order to fulfill her promise to Seliose, wove a myth proclaiming that she and her descendants were born of Seliose's lineage.[4]
