Dialogue[]
- (First interaction)
- Agnes: "This sweet taste is like the first drop of water from the cracks of the ice when the river unfreezes after the Solwarm Festival, a bit of warmth amidst the bitter cold..."
- Agnes: What do you think? Doesn't this description give you an appetite?
...Are you asking me?
- Agnes: Yeah, do you see anyone else?
...Maybe?
- Agnes: You don't sound so convinced. I understand, you are saying "No."
Not a chance.
- Agnes: Well, I can't blame you — it's my own problem. My writing is not good enough.
- Agnes: Darn it. What's the point of being a food journalist if I can't use words to construct a sense of taste and utilize synesthesia? By the way, while I'm talking with you, I have another paragraph here. Let me read it to you.
- Agnes: "The rich sauces are like an invading army, completely overwhelming the crisp and fresh taste of the salmon. The gentle aroma of fish has no choice but to surrender in defeat..."
- Agnes: How's that feel? A little too wordy?
You should write a novel.
Yes, a lot of unnecessary details.- Agnes: I can't help myself, I used to be a literary journalist. Every day I was trying to add more adjectives to the sentence anywhere I could fit them. I wouldn't get my bonus if readers can easily deduce the subject, predicate, and object within three lines.
- Agnes: But then a new girl came and was better at filling in words than I was, so I made a career change. Have you read the cuisine section of the Crystal Daily? I am the author of that section.
- Agnes: Honestly, I don't want to include all that garish garbage in my writing anyway...
- Agnes: I'm gonna put more work into honing my rhetorical skills. Well, enough about me — how can I help you?
- (Continue onto dialogue options below)
- (Subsequent interactions)
- Agnes: "Over time, salmon's rich taste becomes mild and makes its way into the defenseless Redsunset. When the seasoning and ingredient of Redsunset Salmon melt into each other, the distinction drawn between salmon and Redsunset becomes ever more blurred..."
- Agnes: Sorry, still scrambling to finish my article. Did one paragraph today, but I want to bin the whole thing already...
- Agnes: Need to put more work into honing my rhetorical skills. How may I help?
Can we talk...?
- Agnes: Hmm? Please elaborate.
About writing...
Then why don't you try a more straightforward style of writing?
- Agnes: It won't do. The paper has its requirements and the chief editor has his own. Word count needs to hit quotas, that's for sure. We get paid by words after all...
- Agnes: Other than that, the editor has made it clear that our paper is produced with the educated class in mind. Ideally, our average readership should consider exposure to our publication both a privilege and a chance to learn.
- Agnes: That newbie is a natural for this. She can write a hundred pages for what could have been described using a few words.
Don't you admire her talent?
- Agnes: Who wants to write an essay when it could be done with just ten words? But when you write professionally, it becomes a useful skill. Nika was better at this. That's why I had no objections to giving my position to Nika...
- Agnes: Be that as it may, I just can't force myself! I am not made for this!
Write some more and you'll get the hang of it.
- Agnes: I've already bloated a ten thousand-word interview script to forty thousand! That's the best I can do.
- Agnes: To think that the ways of great writers accrued through the ages are used by me to simply bloat word count... How pathetic.
About food...
Any recommendations?
- Agnes: Nope. I'm not mad at you. I'm simply stating facts. Belobog is not a huge place with a huge variety of food. The same ingredients are used for hundreds of years. Quite literally every possible combination has been used at some point.
- Agnes: But if you are not from around here, Redsunset Salmon might be worth trying.
- Agnes: It's not exclusive to this place, I know. But you can only get the freshest salmon from the Administrative District. Once you've tasted it, you'll remember it for the rest of your life.
How many dishes have you tried?
- Agnes: Four thousand, if I'm being conservative. But to be honest, hundreds of these dishes are purely new combinations of old recipes. People in Belobog are masters when it comes to naming their food. We have names for dozens of body parts of fish. When you mix and match, you'll come up with new recipes in no time.
I've got it.
- Agnes: I hope my long articles can be as clear as the explanation today...
That's all questions I have.
Thank you for your time.
- Agnes: No worries. If you'd like, do have a look at my column on food. Comments are always welcome.
- Agnes: If you have any questions related to food, don't hesitate to come to me.
- (Included in subsequent interactions, upon completing Trailblaze Mission No Time for Me, My Friend)
How have things been?
- Agnes: Sorry, I was thinking about the details of something I'm writing. I didn't notice you.
- Agnes: You were asking how I've been recently? Pretty well, but I've been more productive than ever.
Are you making up food stories again?
- Agnes: I would never make up a story! Anyway, thanks to the Supreme Guardian's decision — even though I still don't qualify to apply to wander around the Underworld — the flow of goods between the Overworld and Underworld has already started to normalize.
- Agnes: The mushrooms and edible moss aren't too bad. I've recently sampled several new foods from the Underworld, and now my brain is bursting with inspiration. I have to make good use of it.
Will you go to the Underworld to collect materials?
- Agnes: I certainly would love to... But you need to apply for permission from the Town Hall to go to the Underworld. Travel requests of a tourism nature like mine aren't as likely to receive approval.
- Agnes: At least goods are already starting to be regularly transported between the Overworld and Underworld. I can buy food from the Underworld here, and the prices are cheap.
- Agnes: I've been trying new dishes from the Underworld in the past few days. I've had mushrooms, edible moss, and more... The flavor has been pretty good. Once travel between the two areas fully opens up, I simply must go down there and experience the dining environment.
